Davison Township provides notary services free of charge. No appointment is necessary. A notary public is an officer commissioned by the Michigan Secretary of State to serve as an unbiased and impartial witness. The most common function of the notary is to prevent fraud by attesting to the identity of a person signing a document. Notarization on a document certifies that the person whose signature is entered on the document personally appeared before the notary, established his or her identity, and personally signed the document in the presence of the notary.

If you have documents that need to be notarized:

• DO NOT sign it in advance
• You must sign it in the presence of the notary
• Bring proper identification with you so the notary can verify that you are the same person whose signature is required
• A notary’s job is to witness the actual signing of a document
• They cannot verify the accuracy of the document, and they cannot certify that something is a true copy of the original
• If you need a “Certified True Copy” of a document, these must be obtained from the place that originally issued the document
